Antumbra

Antumbra is very odd role playing horror adventure which starts off inside the underground dungeon.

Mixup of RPG and point and click

Few days ago I have already added this game to crazyscarygames.com website and I think it's doing well there, so I don't see why not having it on true horror site right here. I know that role playing games, especially text based, are something we used to stay away from so far, and if I ever planned on adding one, than Antumbra should definitely be that game. It's not just simple text rpg, it also has some interactivity, so I would put somewhere between rpg and point and click games. On top of everything, this is html5 code, so it should work on all devices, including mobile phone - something we didn't have yet on darkhorrorgames. Now, let's back to the game itself....

About the author

DroneLocker is guy with a beard who made Antumbra, which by the way, was his first game. I think he hit the nail on the head with it. Making good horror game is obviously easier said than done. Everybody knows exactly what it takes to make a good horror game - low light, creepy basement, strange distant noises and whispers, blood stains on the walls and a head falling off the ceiling when you least expect it. Yet, not so many people try to do this, and luckily for us, Drone Locker is one of those rare programmers who did it. You will get the chance to see him in the official Antumbra's video I have embedded from YouTube. Guy in the corner should be him. It definitely looks like a programmer to me.

Game features

Reset button is something you would want to click in case anything goes wrong with the game. I guess page reload would do the trick as well, unfortunately don't expect to get back where you were.

This is newgrounds version, so medals should work, at least there, maybe here, but I didn't check that. Game is html5 and I know very little about potential problems.

About the game

Antumbra is a point and click rpg horror adventure where you keep being promted with 3 choices of what to do and mostly which way to go. Basically you navigate through the dark underground corridors which interconnect series of dungeon cells. You are not sure what are the distant noises, what's been hiding behind the corners or locked doors, but if you make a wrong choice you will soon find out. Wrong choice always leads to your death and forces you to go back to the beginning. So the concept of the game is trial and error. The overall atmosphere is really well done, as you constantly hear strange whispering voices, all kinds of noises and there are jumpscares too.

Whatever the author's idea with this game was, one thing is definite: this is very weird game. The adventure will take you through the dungeon, out in the jungle, across the desert to meet the 'creator' in the final scene. Some tasks require logical answers but mostly picking the right answer is matter of pure luck. Basically only this is what makes this game very hard. Anyway, unless you give up in the process, it could be a good timewaster. Can't wait to read comments.
