Hotel 626 - The best horror game you're never going to play
Hotel 626 - The best horror game you're never going to play
The game was actually a promotional title that was slightly bizarrely created as part of a Halloween marketing campaign for Dorito's, but doesn't really have any connection to the massively popular snack. Instead, it's an intense thrill-ride which finds players trapped in a nightmare hotel with one goal: escape. To achieve this, you must complete various twisted challenges, such as singing a demon baby to sleep, while finding your way through the darkened corridors of the hotel.
The game made use of several ground-breaking techniques, like using the player's webcam to take a picture of them and then incorporating it into the game itself, as part of a madman's lair. It's also filmed entirely in live-action, using real actors and sets, but unlike other so-called interactive movies, this one actually involves plenty of player interaction. For example, one scene requires you to blind a screaming maid with your camera but to succeed you really have to listen to her movements, while the live-action nature also lends a much more intense feel to things.
So, if Hotel 626 is so great and terrifying, why is it no longer available? A quick search of the internet reveals all sorts of urban myths and bold claims from individuals who apparently know more than the rest of us. One theory is that the game was hacked, with the hacker then making frightening phone calls to players using information submitted during the sign-up process. Another idea is that the game was simply too terrifying and that the game's makers were forced to take it down for fear of lawsuits. However, while it is now difficult to sort out what is conjecture and what is fact, it does seem that the truth is somewhat less interesting than the conspiracy theorists would have you believe. The part about players receiving phone calls after escaping the hotel is actually true, but it was intentional on the part of Dorito's. Apparently, players would get a call in the middle of the night telling them that they had not really escaped the horror and that there was no escape from Hotel 626. This probably led to the idea about the lawsuits, but the game was available for two years before being pulled and which was also joined by a sequel, Asylum 626, the following Halloween, which casts some doubt over this claim. The real truth, as close as can be ascertained, is as simple as this: the game was only ever intended to be available for a short time and was taken down by its creators when it had served its purpose.Sadly, watching YouTube videos of Hotel 626 is the only way to experience the game now and although this isn't quite as terrifying as playing it yourself, it will unfortunately have to do. Although it is undeniably cheesy in places, the game still has the power to chill, with some wonderfully timed shocks and some fantastically creepy environments. Although Hotel 626 has seemingly gone out of business forever, perhaps one day Dorito's will see fit to bring it back and those who missed out the first time can see what all the fuss was about. Here's hoping we see those doors open once more. But would you dare to enter?
