When legendary Youtuber PewDiePie labels something as the creepiest game ever, that’s something to make even the most cynical of spectators sit up and take notice. In reality though (and ignoring the celebrity fans), Which isn’t exactly the greatest, or longest, horror experience ever made, thanks to gameplay which is a bit too minimalist. However, it is certainly an intriguing title which is likely to haunt your dreams long after you’ve finished it and which is deserving of attention.

Which is a promising and largely compelling piece of low-key horror escape with a classic haunted house approach and some headless bodies floating in rooms.
Classic haunted house approach
Which takes a classic haunted house approach to its gameplay, setting the player up in a seemingly normal location and then charging them with one simple task: find the way out. Of course, this is more complex than it seems, and it takes some exploring to find all that you require and piece together what exactly is going on. The whole thing starts out relatively normal, but it’s not long before you discover headless bodies floating in rooms and other such freaky things and which quickly start to mess with your head.
Static makes the scares even more intense
This certainly isn’t a complex game with many mechanics that need learning or cheap jump shocks that scare you out of your seat. Instead, it simply concentrates on exploration and building up atmosphere to the point where the player genuinely doesn’t know whether they want to continue or go and hide in a cupboard until it all goes away. This brooding sense of menace is largely built up through the game’s distinctive graphics, which steer clear of the complex layering that games like Silent Hill and Dead Space use to such great effect. Rather, Which takes its cues from found footage movies, with its grainy visuals that are shot through with static and which serve to make the scares even more intense.
About gameplay, puzzles, keys ...
However, it’s not all good news. The game largely revolves around the discovery of keys in order to allow the player to escape and it’s here that Which slightly comes apart. The puzzles which need to be solved are undeniably on the tricky side and this difficulty does take away from the atmosphere as the player starts to feel removed from the narrative and feel as if they are playing a game, rather than being immersed in their surroundings. On the whole, Which is a promising and largely compelling piece of low-key horror. It’s not about out-and-out shocks and action so don’t go in expecting Resident Evil but if you like things downbeat, quirky and just plain creepy, then this is likely to be right up your darkened alley.
