Top Three Horror Movies of 2013

While some critics may say that 2013 was a very bad year for the people who like horror movies, we are here to let you know that it wasn't as bad as it seemed. 2013 brought plenty of chills and screams for movie goers. In fact, we had an instant classic in The Conjuring and more gore than you can shake a fist at in the remake of the Evil Dead. So if you find yourself wondering what horror movie to watch tonight, here are the top three that 2013 had to offer.

Number One on our top three of '13 is, of course, The Conjuring. This horror flick became an instant classic the moment that it began showing in the theater. The Conjuring is unlike most of the horror movies this year in the way that it deals with gore. The gore is remarkably absent, though there are just a few small parts, and instead, it has been replaced with something even more horrifying, superb camera shots that raise the tension levels to painful heights. From the opening scenes, the tension starts to rise and does not stop! This masterful telling in horror is directed by James Wan and is based on a true paranormal experience witnessed by two famous paranormal investigators, Ed and Loraine Warren who used their expertise to help a troubled family. If you are looking for incredibly intelligent horror, then look no farther than The Conjuring.

Number two on our top three of '13 is the Evil Dead. This movie is a remake of the cult horror flick from 1981 by the same name. The original was directed by Sam Rami and stared Bruce Campbell. Despite taking itself very seriously, the movie had more cheese than any plate of mac and cheese that Kraft has to offer. The new version, however, is a more polished take on the story, though it still smells like Wisconsin’s finest. The story takes place in a cabin that just “happens” to hold a very powerful book which can raise demons. Unfortunately, for the stars of the movies, the demons go on a killing spree and wipe out the cast of the film. The new Evil Dead is directed by Fede Alverez and stars Jane Levy. Moral of the story? Don’t go messing around with demon books left in creepy cabins, got it?

Rounding out our top three of '13 horror movies is Maniac. This thriller is all about a love gone wrong. This movie is also a remake from the '80's. It stars Elijah Wood, aka Frodo from the Lord of the Rings. This slasher film is unique in the way the movie is presented, giving first person views from the killer. This different creep angle, strangely works as viewers get kind of sucked in to the madness. Maniac is directed by French film maker Franck Khalfoun. And because this is a French film, it is void of any of the normal trappings of a big budget Hollywood horror film, so if you need all the bells and whistles, you may want to opt out of this on movie night.

So there you have it, the best three horror movies from '13. As the nights get colder, these three picks are guaranteed to keep your blood warm and your heart racing. These movies, delivered in an otherwise off kilter year for the horror movie fan, definitely have what it takes to keep you up all night. So, happy thrills and chills!
